Diversity reaction articles

The first article I read was “Here I am” I found this article to be really motivating actually. I come from a small town where there isn’t any diversity really. It’s just a small town in southern Nebraska filled with farmers. I grew up with the same people my entire life basically. Yes I moved as a kid but even moving the people never really changed. They were the same type of people everywhere. It wasn’t until I went to college that I really got to understand diversity a little more.

This article really does a good job of telling the story of this illustrator and author and how he got to be where he is today. I love that it goes from “where am I” to “Here I am”. I also really liked that at the end of the article it gave us a few steps as teachers to help us get from “where am I” to “Here I am”.

I think we as teachers need to do a better job about picking books for our classrooms and making them more diverse. We need to really think about the lessons that will go along with our book and how we will bring this into the children’s everyday lives.

I didn’t read a second article because when I went to open up the link it kept saying page not found.

  1. I have to agree with you! Coming from a small town, there isn’t much diversity. But once you hit college, it is another world. You see several different types of culture and ethnic groups. When doing my classroom observation, there was a question about how did the teacher hand the different cultural diversity. I couldn’t answer this question because frankly there just isn’t in the small farming communities.

    1. I totally understand that. It was so hard answering some of these questions because really the only diversity you see in these communities is the amount of money different families have.

  2. I enjoyed reading your thoughts regarding diversity. I would agree with you that we as teachers need to do a better job at picking books that are diverse for our classroom. I also think library’s should have diverse books on display with other books so people notice them when they walk into the library! Thank you for sharing! 🙂
